My Spirit Animal, Solangate and Road Trips
My internet-turned-real friend Jamie has started writing every day. She is really great at it, and you should check her out. I am not so great at it. Things that I think through on the way to work, or the way home, or trying to get to sleep at night seem like really interesting topics, and then fizzle out when it actually comes time to put pen to pad (for instance, I have this whole thing about the idea of inheritance in August: Osage County; we should talk about it). What I CAN do, though, is offer a quick peek into the sometimes-random-mostly-typical things I find myself doing each week. Here's the past week, May 9 through 15.
Friday night, 9:45pm: After making, breaking, then not firming up plans, I'm drinking wine and getting teary on my couch while listening to Paul Simon sing Biko.
Later that same Friday, 10:08pm: And now, crafts!!!
Saturday, 10:30pm: Sadly, I don't think there's any way I can look like Tilda Swinton at 53 if I'm not even remotely that awesome looking at 32. WHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYY*? (*Side note: I know why. Don't feel like you have to tell me.)
Sunday, 4:15pm: So many things today. It's a good day. One thing I'm thinking about: Sometimes I wonder if my parents had the same concerns that I have when they were my age. At my age, they did have two kids. Were both in their second marriage. Were in their third "hometown" together. That seems so much more "grown up" than where I am in life right now. Am I completely behind the curve, or just on a totally different track? I've read that social media and popular culture nowadays is creating a world of stunted adults. Do I fall into that trap? I worry about that. A lot.**
Monday, 11:47am: Is it normal to watch Solange hit Jay-Z so many times in a row? I can't decide if this makes me less or more suspect about the Beyoncé-is-Solange's-mom theory.
Later that same Monday, 6:45pm: I'm trying to take a quick half hour power nap before running errands, but I can't stop thinking about triangles.
Tuesday, 8:58pm: I'm driving to a completely new place this weekend and I can hardly contain my excitement. It's just another place in Alabama, but it'll be a stretch of road I've never seen before. New landscapes. New points of reference. New destination.
Wednesday, 2:14pm: I had a Gigi's cookie sandwich in two parts and now...
Thursday, 2:38pm: Why can't it be Friday?
**FYI: I don't condone the regular use of the phrase "a lot." Use responsibly.
